What could make the Holiday Season sparklier, flashier, and all around merrier for Dragfans? How about a special Holiday episode of everyone's favorite drag reality competition show! "RuPaul’s Drag Race Holi-slay Spectacular," coming your way December 7th at 8PM EST on VH1 is sure to be a welcome early Christmas gift. Mama Ru has invited eight of our favorite Queens back to the mainstage to compete in lewks, lip-synching, and dancing for the coveted title of Drag Race Xmas Queen.
“Nothing says Christmas like ‘Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, and drag queens slipping on their pantyhose,'" says two-time Emmy winning host RuPaul via press statement. "Celebrating the holidays with my most festive girls inspired me to record my new album, 'Christmas Party.' And this VH1 holiday extravaganza is my way of saying thank you to my Drag Race family by spreading a little bit of love, laughter, and light across the country and around the world.”
Competitors on the Holiday Special are fan favorites Shangela Laquifa Wadley, veteran of three separate seasons of Drag Race (and who most recently snatched a featured role in the film A Star Is Born starring Lady Gaga), Jasmine JUSH Masters, Latrice Royale, Kim Chi, Sonique, Mayhem Miller, and Eureka O’Hara. All-Stars season three winner Trixie Mattel will also compete.
Newer fans will probably recognize Shangela, Eureka, and Trixie from recent RPDR seasons and expect exciting holiday looks from all three, but Queens like Latrice Royale and Kim Chi have not been seen in competition since their earlier seasons, meaning their makeup styles and skills might have developed from what longtime fans have previously seen. In addition, Sonique (Kylie Sonique Love) is now competing as a transitioned transgender woman, an important change that will certainly be reflected in her looks and performance since fans last saw her on season two.
Current reigning All-Star, Trixie Mattel may be perceived as having an advantage, with her massive popularity, two chart-topping albums, as well as a holiday album already under her belt. Still, when it comes to pulling out all the stops, often over-the-top and always delightful Eureka might be the perfect fit for a Christmas-themed Queen. We can't wait to see who turns it hardest and wins the crown!
Choreographer Todrick Hall is back helping the Queens with their moves as they'll be performing choreographed stage numbers to tracks from RuPaul's new Holiday album, as well as some from 2015's Slay Belles. Judges Michelle Visage and Ross Mathews also join Ru in spreading holiday cheer and crowning the very first Drag Race Xmas Queen. So, mark the date December 7th as a night in, because you're not going to want to miss this Holi-slay Spectacular!
